Did you know that April is National Humor Month? When you think about it, this makes perfect sense considering that the month kicks off with a day dedicated to pranks and practical jokes (April Fool's Day)!
However, all joking aside (pun intended!) laughter really is the best medicine! As with most cliché sayings, this one is rooted in undeniable truth!
.) Humans are born with the capacity to laugh, laughing before they ever speak. In fact, children who are born blind and deaf are able to laugh.
.) The syllables “ha-ha,” “ho-ho,” or “he-he” are part of the universal human vocabulary and are recognized by all cultures.
.) Laughter is contagious. In fact, just seeing another person laugh activates centers in the brain that control facial movement, preparing you to join in.
.) Laughter is rarely triggered by humor or jokes. In his book, Laughing: A Scientific Investigation, author Robert R. Provine describes a study he conducted where his team found that of the 1200 ‘laugh episodes’ they overheard as they listened in on normal conversations at local malls, only about 10% were because of a joke. Laughter really stems from a shared interaction between people.
.) Laughter relaxes the whole body. It has been shown that after a good laugh, muscles in the body are relaxed for up to 45 minutes afterward.
.) Just 10 to 15 minutes of laughing a day can burn up to 40 calories.
.) Laughter can act as a pain reliever.
.) Laughter reduces blood sugar levels, increasing glucose tolerance in both diabetics and nondiabetics.
.) Laughter helps your blood vessels function better, improving both your heart and brain.
.) Laughter decreases cortisol, a hormone that floods the body when we are stressed and causes inflammation and disease in the body.
.) Humans can detect fake laughter.
.) Personal ads for both men and women mention humor as a desired trait more often than education, intelligence, profession or sexual drive.
.) Couples who laugh together are more likely to have long-lasting, healthy relationships.
.) Laughter synchronizes the brains of both speaker and listener so that they become emotionally attuned.
.) Even forcing a laugh can improve your mood!
So, go ahead and laugh away, not just this month, but every day!
