EnvisionWell Podcast: Regaining Your Health

Conversations that Matter for 360° Well-Being®

Episode 20: Regaining Your Health

In this episode, CEO and Founder of Envision2bWell, Tammy Williams, is joined by Dr. Jenneffer Pulapaka, founder of DeLand Foot and Leg Center (DFALC) and the first podiatrist  to be a Board Certified Physician Diplomate in Lifestyle Medicine. Dr. Pulapaka brings a unique perspective to the EnvisionWell podcast in how she approaches her patients to help them regain their health. Not interested in quick fixes or in focusing solely on the feet and legs as if they exist apart from the rest of the body, Dr. Pulapaka is a whole-person focused podiatrist and physician that we can all learn from.

Since 2005, Dr. Jenneffer Pulapaka’s expertise in wound care and podiatric surgery has helped thousands of patients. She founded her practice that year, DeLand Foot and Leg Center (DFALC), where she currently sees patients. DFALC was the first female podiatric surgeon’s office in a community where less than 10% of the surgeons were women. It is the first and longest-running female surgical practice in West Volusia County. She is the first Podiatrist to be a Board Certified Physician Diplomate in Lifestyle Medicine, “I believe every patient needs a physician who will be an advocate to help them regain their health.” Her surgical training has taken her to Miami for her residency and the Ilizarov Institute, in Russia, for her fellowship. To that end, she was the first certified Women-Owned medical practice in the United States.

Dr. Pulapaka is one of the initial two Founders, with her husband, and the groundbreaking Wine Director of Cress Restaurant, a business dedicated to improving our food system, through local sources, sustainable practices, and refined flavours. During the inception of the restaurant in 2008, she noted that “Cress had relationships with where their food came from, with the individuals who were growing them: the farmers, the fishermen, the cattlemen. Sustainability rests on the principle that we must continue to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations.”

Dr. Pulapaka’s husband, a mathematics Associate Professor and World Master Chef, Hari Pulapaka PhD, has been a driving force along with her family. Their support enabled Dr. Pulapaka to be recognized in 2019 Top Innovative Health Care Provider in Podiatry, 2014 Orlando Sentinel Culinary Hall of Fame, James Beard Foundation for her contributions over multiple years, 2020 & 2015 Wine contributor in Sinfully Vegetarian & Dreaming in Spice , 2014 Founding Member goFLA & #Sunshineplate, 2014 Power Couple Central Florida, 2013 Top Influential Women in Business Volusia / Flagler County, and 2014 Emeril’s Florida Season 2 Premiere – Coming to America! She frequently is a guest speaker regarding our food systems, wine pairings, wound care, and limb salvage care plans. She has a new book in the works with a publishing house for October 2021.

“The preservation of health will not come from our Nation’s leaders. It begins in our homes, in our kitchens, with our family & friends. The success and survival of our health are dependent upon knowing our vulnerabilities; and out of that knowledge will come strength, if we learn the lessons presented.”

In 2013, she began to focus on wound care and limb salvage, a specialty missing in our area, completing my Certified Wound Specialist Physician (CWSP) in 2016. In August 2016, she was certified with the American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry – Prevention and Treatment of Diabetic Foot Wounds and Diabetic Footwear. She also became Board Certified with the American Board of Wound Healing – Physician Certification in Wound Care (PCWC), and so she is triple board certified in wound care.

During 2019, while finishing her Plant-Based Nutrition Certification and changing to a Lifestyle Medicine based practice, she founded the Plant to Plate Patient Garden; because patients want and need healthy, affordable options for fresh vegetables and fruits. There are simple ways to help. One way was by building a free community garden for patients at DFALC. Another way is with a physician-driven RX: Veggies & Fruits Patient Program. This naturally led to her Culinary Health Education Fundamentals (CHEF) Coaching completion issued Aug 2020 from the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, the principal teaching hospital of the Harvard Medical School.

“Finally, in November 2020 I became the first Podiatrist to be a Board Certified Physician Diplomate of the American (International) Board of Lifestyle Medicine (ABLM) DipABLM / DipIBLM --- and retired from my position with the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons to pursue a sustainable medical path. We need to focus on prevention and away from reactionary sick care, like my current project SOKTEKTM, a Wound Indicator Sock for a better workplace through wellness.”
