Before we can get into the nitty gritty of what the KSAA® Assessment is, we must first explain what KSAA® is.
KSAA® (pronounced KISS-UH) stands for Knowledge, Support, Access, and Autonomy – the four foundational elements of Social Health Empowerment®. Founded on a social determinants of health framework, these elements are rooted in the crucial interplay between societal conditions and individual behaviors and choices. KSAA® is the bridge from the societal conditions that hold us back to more empowered, healthier behaviors and choices. With the right Knowledge, Support, Access, and Autonomy, we are ALL empowered to live sustainably healthier, more joyful lives.
Social determinants of health (SDoH) impact up to 80% of health outcomes. They are the conditions in which people live, learn, work, and play. As outlined by the CDC, the five key areas of SDoH are:
- Healthcare Access and Quality
- Education Access and Quality
- Social and Community Context
- Economic Stability
- Neighborhood and Built Environment
Public health initiatives have taken social determinants of health into account for decades and that trend is only growing stronger. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has a nationwide initiative titled Healthy People 2030 in which SDoH plays a major role. One of the five overarching goals of Healthy People 2030 is specifically related to social determinants of health: “Create social, physical, and economic environments that promote attaining the full potential for health and well-being for all.”
Knowledge: Do your employees have the knowledge they need?
Support: Do your employees have the support they need?
Access: Do your employees have easy access to the resources they need?
Autonomy: Do your employees feel safe and valued expressing their thoughts and needs?
The KSAA® Workplace Wellness Assessment (KSAA® Assessment for short) is a survey that provides insight and data into the engagement, satisfaction, and well-being of employees. It tells the story of how employees experience – and are impacted by – the organization in eight areas of health, well-being, and workplace culture. The KSAA® Assessment was created specifically to address social determinants of health in the workplace.
With the data gleaned from the assessment, employers will gain insight about the extent to which employees experience Knowledge, Support, Access, and Autonomy in the following seven areas:
- Physical Health
- Emotional Health
- Social Connections
- Financial Health
- Education / Training
- Life/Work Balance
- Company Mission
Employers will also gain insight into the overall well-being of their employees in the following ten areas (our 10 Pillars of 360° Well-Being®): Eating ◊ Fitness ◊ Finance ◊ Health ◊ Humanity ◊ Kindness ◊ Mental Health ◊ Relationships ◊ Spirituality ◊ Work.
It is well-known that many company sponsored wellness programs don’t see the engagement or results they anticipate because the programs don’t connect to real needs. A recent study out of Harvard and the University of Chicago indicated that employee wellness programs aren’t producing as they should. They don’t quite move the needle in terms of health outcomes and other indicators.
Given the magnitude of the problem of unwellness on both health care costs and lost productivity, as well as employee morale and well-being, employers cannot afford to abandon wellness programs all together, however. Rather, it is time to gain clarity and understanding about what their employees really need.
