National Employee Health and Fitness Day Challenge


When Global Employee Health and Fitness Month was first observed in 1989, it was more of a fringe topic. Created by the National Association for Health and Fitness to promote the importance of employee health and wellness at a time when it was not mainstream, it is now a globally observed, award-winning health promotion event.

Most of us have heard the catch phrase, “Sitting is the new smoking.” Maybe you wondered if it was true? Unfortunately, the verdict is in. Sitting too much during the day is associated with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high blood sugar levels. What’s more, even if you exercise regularly, it won’t necessarily counteract the dangers of prolonged sitting.

Research shows that thirty minutes of daily exercise is not enough to overcome the health detriments of prolonged sitting. Thankfully, adding in light movement throughout your day can help. Examples of light movement are housework, yard work, playing with your children, putting away groceries, etc. Ideally, you want to get 150 minutes / week of exercise coupled with light movement throughout the day.

Moral of the story? Grab any chance you can to move. Here are a few easy ways:

Park far away from the grocery store.

Take the stairs whenever you can.

Walk in place when on the phone or in a meeting.

Perform 2-3 minutes of light movement every thirty minutes.

Foam roll, stretch, or do some restorative yoga moves while watching TV.

Take a walk every night after dinner.


National Employee Health and Fitness Day Challenge

In honor of National Employee Health and Fitness Day, here is a challenge to help you begin to incorporate more movement into your day. Every thirty minutes, perform the following moves:

- 20 Jumping jacks

- 15 second plank hold

- 10 squats

- 5 push-ups

- 1 stretch (your choice)
